In England, Christmas has long been associated with John Lewis, a big department store that can trace its roots back to 1864 and specifically a humble store in London’s Oxford Street. The main reason for this, is that every year the company produces an extremely memorable Christmas advert –  one that is almost guaranteed to soften even the hardest and sceptical of hearts!

The music used in the advertising campaigns is often a crucial component of the adverts’ success. The marketers often take a classic song from the past and produce a covered version. This often leads to a high position for the music in the UK Singles Chart, with the original songs often receiving a sales boost as well.

This year’s advert is said to have cost around 7 million pounds to produce and features Norwegian singer Aurora and a cover of Oasis’ 1994 B-side “Half the World Away”.

John Lewis Christmas 2014 advert

This heartwarming advert tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between a little boy Sam and his penguin friend Monty.British singer-songwriter Tom Odell recorded a cover for the advert of the 1976 John Lennon song “Real Love”, which was the last official song recorded by the Beatles after being re-released in 1996. This is my JL favourite advert.
